Donald McGill: The King of the Saucy Postcard

An educational resource covering the history of the postcard, postcards and the law, and the drive to stamp out smut with the rise in popularity of McGill's postcards at the seaside.

Two people in striped and red swimsuits are in the water, with a humorous caption about swimming abilities at the top.

Jonas Kiedrowski took some time off from his PhD studies at the University of Kent to explore the world of Donald McGill's postcards - sounds like time off well spent!

Jonas rifled through the McGill collection at the British Cartoon Archive and visited the Donald McGill Museum in Ryde, to produce an informative and richly illustrated newsletter for the Public Legal Education Association (PLEA) in Saskatchewan, Canada.

The newsletter can be used as an educational resource and looks at the regulatory history of postcards, Donald McGill’s rise to fame, and the prosecution of saucy seaside postcards in the mid-20th century. It's available as a PDF document and online.
