The neglected heritage of the seaside

An academic paper by SHN trustees Anya Chapman and Duncan Light which looks at why the heritage of our seaside resorts is so frequently overlooked

In The neglected heritage of the English seaside holiday, SHN trustees Anya Chapman and Duncan Light examine why the architecture of entertainment and pleasure has so rarely been considered in terms of heritage.

They examine conventional ways of defining heritage and the pervasive influence of the ‘Authorised Heritage Discourse ’, which conventionally accepts some things as being ‘heritage’, whilst excluding other things. The heritage of seaside towns simply doesn’t fit the way of thinking of the Authorised Heritage Discourse.

However, things are gradually changing. The heritage of tourism itself at the seaside is increasingly valued by local communities and is also being mobilised within strategies of place promotion as seaside resorts reposition themselves as destinations for heritage tourism
