Twentieth Century Seaside Architecture
New seaside buildings and attractions were created throughout the twentieth century. This seminar will draw attention to some of the overlooked architecture of the recent past starting in the post-war era. Our own Dr Kathryn Ferry, author of a forthcoming book entitled Twentieth Century Seaside Architecture will discuss how entertainment buildings were influenced by the 1951 Festival of Britain. Dan Thompson, artist, maker and writer on seaside regeneration, will discuss Margate’s Brutalist tower block, Arlington House, sharing insights from his experience as a former resident. We’ll then be hearing from Andrew Clay, General Manager at Sea Life Scarborough, about the innovative aquariums designed for resorts around the coast in the 1980s and 90s.
