Seaside Gardens

A colorful garden overlooks a lake with elegant bridges, surrounded by lush greenery and vibrant flowers. Two people walk along the curved path.

Seaside gardens in British resorts emerged in the late 18th century. Often located at the seafront, seaside gardens are distinctive landscapes offering exotic planting, pavilions, and ornate shelters for genteel leisure pursuits. Seaside gardens adapted to the leisure fashions of the time, and by the 1930s featured popular leisure facilities such as boating lakes, putting greens and sun terraces. Seaside gardens are now undergoing a renaissance as the well-being benefits of green and blue spaces are increasingly recognised, leading to the restoration and renewed appreciation of these unique seaside spaces.

We’ll be joined by speakers including Julie Rudge from Friends of King’s Gardens, Southport, who will provide a virtual tour of the gardens and their recent restoration, and Adrian Perry, President of Scarborough Civic Society, considers the unique charm of Scarborough’s South Cliff Gardens.

🌿🌊 Whether you’re a garden historian, heritage professional, gardener, or coastal culture enthusiast, this seminar offers a fascinating window into the green heart of Britain’s seaside towns.
