Murder at the Seaside
The Seaside Heritage Network is pleased to announce a special fundraising seminar: Murder at the Seaside
The seminar will take place on Wednesday 8th July 2026 from 16.30 to 17.30 and will be delivered via Zoom.
While the seaside is associated with fun and entertainment, over the decades, numerous writers have used the seaside as the setting for crime and murder, with perhaps the notable example being Agatha Christie. 2026 is a year of special celebrations of Agatha Christie, and in our special fundraising seminar, we are delighted to be joined by three fantastic speakers who will consider different ‘scenes of the crime’ at the seaside. Vlad Krupa, Director of Guest Relations on Burgh Island, will tell the story of the hotel and its famous guests. Agatha Christie was inspired by the island’s beauty to use it as the setting for "And Then There Were None" and "Evil Under the Sun". Today, the glamour of the 1920's is preserved in the hotel, which still has a special atmosphere. Dr Rachael Kiddey, Strategic Lead for Culture and Heritage at Torbay Council, will discuss the regeneration of Torquay Pavilion and the proposals for the Agatha Christie Research and Visitor Centre. Caroline Crampton’s Shedunnit podcast unravels the mysteries behind classic detective stories. The Observer called each episode “a small but perfectly formed little gem” and the Irish Times says it is “essential listening for any dedicated mystery reader”. Caroline will talk about some of the detective literature from between the wars that features the seaside as its backdrop. She will be covering titles by, among others, Agatha Christie, Dorothy L. Sayers and Josephine Tey.
Tickets for this seminar cost £5 with proceeds supporting the work of the Seaside Heritage Network.
