All The Fun Of The Fair
Funfairs, amusement parks, and even theme parks have been a prominent form of seaside entertainment since the late 19th century. A favourite with thrill-seekers and families, these seaside attractions were originally developed by the showmen families from the travelling fairs who often became 'sand dancers' as they located their stalls, rides and booths at the seaside. The parks have been a focal point for seaside holidays and fond memories for generations of holidaymakers.
In this seminar we will be joined by three speakers: Seaside Heritage Network's Allan Brodie will talk about Britain’s Remarkable Seaside Amusement Park Heritage, including Margate’s Scenic Railway of 1920 which was until recently the oldest operating rollercoaster in the world. He will also look at Blackpool Pleasure Beach and the remarkable survival of ten significant early rides, including four rollercoasters that date from before 1939, a heritage unmatched anywhere in the world. Serena Silcock, Operations Manager for Silcocks Leisure Group will provide fascinating insights on the heritage of the Silcock family and their journey from travelling fairs to operators of leading seaside attractions in Southport. Anya Chapman from the Seaside Heritage Network draws on her amusement park managerial experience and considers the reasons for the significant loss and decline of seaside amusement parks and funfairs in the 21st Century.
The seminar is free to attend and all are welcome.
