British Seaside Resorts as World Heritage?

Art deco casino building at Blackpool Pleasure Beach

In Britain, we often take our seaside resorts for granted. The Seaside Heritage Network exists to celebrate our colourful seaside heritage and believes that it should receive greater recognition, including on the world stage.

Henry Owen-John, a Trustee of World Heritage UK, will talk about the work of the organisation which represents the United Kingdom’s diverse World Heritage Sites. It provides support for those engaged in their strategic and day to day management as well as encouraging the development of new proposals. Henry will be giving insights into the process of becoming a World Heritage Site.

Julies Reynes from the Ville de Nice will be talking about how the city became a World Heritage Site, making it the first seaside resort to be inscribed for its connection with tourism. In July 2021, it was inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage List as "Nice, the city of the winter resort of the Riviera".

Dr Allan Brodie, formerly of Historic England and now a Visiting Fellow at Bournemouth University, will conclude the session by arguing that the British seaside meets the criteria to be inscribed as a World Heritage Site. So, one day Stonehenge and the Tower of London, might have to say hello to Brighton and Blackpool.
