Twentieth Century Seaside Architecture

New seaside buildings and attractions were created throughout the twentieth century. This seminar draws attention to some of the overlooked architecture of the recent past, starting in the post-war era. Our own Dr Kathryn Ferry, author of the book 'Twentieth Century Seaside Architecture' discusses how entertainment buildings were influenced by the 1951 Festival of Britain. Dan Thompson, artist, maker and writer on seaside regeneration, considers Margate’s Brutalist tower block, Arlington House, sharing insights from his experience as a former resident. Finally, we hear from Andrew Clay, General Manager at Sea Life Scarborough, about the innovative aquariums designed for resorts around the coast in the 1980s and 90s.
