Museums and the Seaside story
There are numerous museums in our seaside towns and they play an important role in telling the story of seaside holidays. They do so by collecting objects relating to the seaside holiday, but also by collecting the stories and voices of holidaymakers. In this seminar, we hear from three museum and heritage professionals on how they tell the seaside story. John West, Trustee of West Bay Discovery Centre outlines the development of the Centre; Kate Hebditch, Collections and Volunteer Coordinator at Weymouth Museum discusses Weymouth’s ‘Health, Wealth at Happiness’; and Seaside Heritage Network’s Kathryn Ferry, who has visited most seaside museums, shares her favourite museum objects with us. From Victorian bathing machines to modern-day conservation efforts, our speakers navigate the changing tides of conveying the seaside heritage story.
