Art Deco Seaside

An art deco style house in Frinton-on-sea with a green and orange sunburst motif gate

In this seminar we’ll be celebrating the centenary of Art Deco with a look at how this influential style shaped seaside places in the 1920s and 30s. We’ll be hearing from the New Palace and Adventureland in New Brighton, winners of our 2024 Bucket and Spade List, about the long heritage of this family-owned attraction which opened in a striking Art Deco building in 1939. Dr Allan Brodie, formerly of Historic England and now a Visiting Fellow at Bournemouth University, will be sharing some of the highlights of Art Deco Bournemouth based on new research undertaken for the walking trail we launched in summer 2023 and Professor Fred Gray, author of Designing the Seaside, will be enlightening us on the appeal of the sunburst as a decorative motif in the interwar era.
